Who wrote Mahabharat - were there two people or only one?

The great indian epic is written by Ved Vyasa. But there was someone, who actually put the pen to paper? Who was he?
Veda Vyasa invoked the presence of Lord Ganesha to record it in written form . Ganesha accepted with one condition , that Veda Vyasa must not stop while reciting the Mahabharata . Veda Vyasa accepted this condition but also said that Ganesha must understand what he is writing and then only write . Sometimes , Veda Vyasa would compose complex verses and when Ganesha sat , understanding their meaning , Veda Vyasa would compose more verses in his mind .
